Background

Early Life

Lin Mai was born in to privilege to two members of the Sun Motion Picture Studio. Her mother was a well known actress her father the studio's top stunt man. The darling daughter was expected to follow in the family footsteps and she did with gusto! Her parents had her in front of the cameras before she could walk, the studio was pleased to have her. They were already seeing how they could build a family legacy. Everyone around the little girl was planning her future, and that's seem how it was going to play out for the rest of her life. Lin Mai didn't mind-it was how she was raised after all.

She took interest in Martial arts at a very early age. She was curious by the exercises her dad would do in the morning and when she was at the studio watching the stunt people work excited her. So her father started to play games with her and show her simple exercise as early as three years old.By the time she was six she was showing her moves for the cameras in various movies. The little family was enjoying the fame and fortune.
Along with her interest in martial arts there came a real enjoyment of gymnastics. It was a crucial part of a stunt persons. She had a multitude of great instructors all who knew variety of styles and techniques, She loved to jump in the air and cartwheel, tumble and flip. She liked to jump between uneven bars and even work on the balance beam. If she hadn't wanted to follow in her parents footsteps she had the potential to compete in the Olympic. Oh how fate deals cards in the game of life.

When the little girl wasn't work with her family, she had her studies in the studio class room by the finest tutors from Hong Kong as well as Britain. She was an excellent student learning subjects with very little trouble. She had a knack at memorizing things, it was hard for her to forget things, which would haunt her later. She learned how to speak English as well as Japanese, and Cantonese during these years. The extra languages helped her in the various roles she would play in Sun Studio films.

While not filming a movie or attending class her favorite thing to do was go visit her maternal grandmother who lived in a small rural village in China. Her Grandmother lived a simple life with a nice little house and garden in the back. She enjoyed helping her grandmother with her garden and learning about the plants and growing the herbs and vegetables for dinner. She wanted a garden of her own back home but her schedule kept her from having one. She did keep books on flowers and plants though. It wasn't the same but it would do.

The Calling

It all started not too long after her fourteenth birthday. She was practicing stunts with her father on afternoon. It was just the two of them in the gym, running through routines one the blue foam rubber mats. She couldn't explain what was happening one moment she was Lin Mai then the next she was something much more. She followed the routine like she was suppose to and hit her father right in the chest knocking him back several feet. She could hear his ribs snap as he hit the ground. She was lucky she didn't kill him and they would eventually laugh it off as the lovely daughter getting a lucky shot on her father. That would be of course the last time they ever spar together.

There was other changes that were effecting her life. Churchill Todd replaced her grammar and literature tutor. He was an old man by Lin Mai's standers with thinning gray hair and wiry glasses over his eyes. He was a plump fellow to, not enormous but obviously well fed in his life. He was just a little bit taller than Lin Mai, which wasn't saying much she wasn't over five feet and didn't expect to get any taller.

Churchill was an excellent teacher and impressed with Lin Mai as a pupil but it seemed he was more interested in watching her spar and practice her acrobatics. He would often watch her and would write notes in a tiny note book. At first she thought he might have been a fan of her movies but it became apparent that there was much more to Mr. Todd.

As part of the class he took Lin Mai to watch an Shakespeare piece being performed in a tiny theater down town. After the show the two strolled down the side walk enjoying conversation about what they had saw when they were attacked from the alleyway. It was then instinct took over for her. She pushed Churchill out of the way and engaged the attackers.

It was a surprise to most when the small girl beat the two would be muggers up. She could see in the faint light that there was something wrong with their faces, a deformity of such. As they ran down the street fleeing for their lives, Churchill threw two wooden stakes to Lin Mai and just as before instinct took over. She threw the stakes in the air and impales both of the muggers in the back and they vanished in a puff of dust. Lin Mai was left horrified and confused.

The two left the area, went to the park and had the conversation that would change Lin Mai's life. She was a Slayer one of select few girls chosen to fight the forces of darkness that threaten the world. She would take her place among these girls and do her duty. He would be her Watcher, one who would train and aid the slayer It didn't take her long, but after what she had witnessed and what she had done she had no choice. She would let fate once again lead her life.

And that's how the two spent most of the next two years. Hong Kong with it's port had always been a trading post and in the underworld it was no different. Demons needed to get various components for spells or items to attempt global destruction. Lin Mai was there to stop them. She didn't get as much action as some of the girls she had heard about from Churchill, but then again Hong Kong wasn't on a Hellmouth.

She was skilled with a variety of weapons as well as her fists. She prefered combat with swords most to anything. Though she understood the desire to have a crossbow or ax handy. The stake was also always with in arms reach. Churchill taught her in the ways of the archaic weapons as bullets wouldn't do as much good against a demon. It seemed in the lives of evil the ancient ways of combat were the best way to eliminate them.

Her martial arts training as well as her acrobatic prowess were welcome additions to her Slayer's calling. She was bright minded and her ability to retain and recite information was near uncanny. Churchill at first had second thoughts of being assigned to a young actress who would be a Slayer but the girl seemed to use all the training she had over the years.

Zhou Zhen Ji

It started a month ago. She was patrolling the docks after hearing that a strange shipment was arriving from California. Once she found the ship she fought her through a group of vampires until she got to the cargo hold. In the bottom she found a disgusting, green, egg that pulsated and oozed. She made the decision right then to destroy it. That was the mistake she regretted.

Lin Mai was enjoying an evening at home with her family and Churchill Todd a nice dinner and perhaps a movie. That was all ruined with the owner of the egg came looking for the Slayer. He called himself Youldron the Lord of Apathy and he carried with him a sword know as Pi Ren the ghost slayer. The egg was his offspring incubating preparing to hatch so the pair could rein hell upon the earth. Since the slayer killed his child, Youldron would destroy everything she held dear.

Lin Mai did her best to defend her house and her love ones but she was unprepared and in the end she was crippled by a broken ankle and arm. She was forced to watch as the demon executed both her mother and father and beat her watcher into a coma. He then turned to the wounded slayer and placed a curse upon her so she would never forget this day. The demon drug the watcher and her body out of the house and then used his powers to burn the place to the ground.

When Lin Mai came to she was in the hospital surrounded by guards and strange men she didn't know. She was informed that the Watchers Council got to her as fast as they could and were sorry there wasn't much more they could do for her or her family. She wasn't sure at first what they were trying to say to her but as soon as the light hit her eyes she knew something was different. The bright light hurt them she could hardly see things were fuzzy and out of focus. Her arms and hands were now pure white as all the pigment had been washed away. The demon curse turned her into an albino.

The Papers said it was a horrible accident and it killed the entire family. Sun Studio payed for a lavish funeral for their fallen stars. Lin Mai and her family were tragic footnotes in the history of Asian cinema. Lin Mai knew she couldn't return to her life since everyone accepted her death, she changed her named to Zhou Zhen Ji and vowed to get her revenge as soon as she was physically able.

The Watcher's council helped her with her eyes giving her contacts that would keep the bright light low in the day so she could see. She would be mostly blind without them in the sunlight. Her skin was also a problem, it burned easy in the sunlight and she would need to keep it covered, she took to the drastic measure to wrapping her body and face in gauze to protect herself and give her enemies a new visage to fear. Zhou Zhen Ji was a slayer and her enemies would know it.

She broke into Churchill's private library only to find out the Watcher's council had already removed his books. Another member of the council was waiting for her ready to tell her things she wanted to hear, that they would find a cure for her curse, do everything they possibly could for her Watcher, but in the end she couldn't move against Youldron. It would be best that she returned with them to England. They would help her through this crisis and get her life back on track. The words fell on deaf ears and Zhou ran off into the night.

It took weeks of using her contacts in the underworld to track this beast. Many she would never have again, one time favors all used up. It was worth it however. Now here she was in Youldron's lair hunting the demon down. She kept the memories of her family being killed and now poor Churchill a vegetable on a machine. She would have satisfaction for this treachery.

It took six weeks for her track the beast down and when she did she slew him with out mercy. This wasn't about the good of the cause, putting the world in a balance tilted for good. This was nothing more than cold blooded revenge. She then turned herself to the watchers council and awaited their judgment.

Devilshire

Zhou was moved to England to undergo treatment for stress and an attempt to find a cure for her condition. She was placed in the care two watchers, a married couple, Malcolm and Sara Jennings, who helped her through her grief. Her recovery time was brief, only six weeks but with evil afoot she was called once more to duty. She was assigned a new watcher and sent to the United States to combat evil there.
