Overview

While not wealthy like the Devlins the Swanns are an active part of the community. Swanns traditionally serve the town in one way or another; they can be found as teachers, police officers, members of the volunteer fire department, dog catchers, selectmen, scout leaders, and more. They are the largest family in town, what with being middle class or lower and not really caring who marries who.

The Swanns quietly train their young according to the strengths they show. Some receive martial training while others are trained as scholars or to become part of the medical community. There is always at least one doctor in every generation to quietly care for any injuries sustained in battle. The Swann Family Practice is the oldest doctor's office in the county.

The Swanns have little love for the occult. They consider it evil and any Swann showing signs of supernatural ability has been cast out of the family...or worse. Magic is particularly distrusted and has become something like a phobia passed down from one generation to the other. Being supernatural, it is thought to be impossible to control and those trying are just fooling themselves.

History

A good chunk of Swann history can be found by looking at the Swann-Devlin Conflict article, but in a nut-shell:

The Swanns are descended from Hans Swann, the captain of the ship that brought the Seekers to Devilshire and quite proud of their heritage. Most Swanns have some sort of nautical experience because of this. It wasn't long after the Swanns settled in Devilshire that they discovered the truth about the Devlins and the Seekers of Biblical Truth. From that day forward, the Swanns dedicated themselves to protecting innocents from the Devlin family. They have done so by covertly spreading their members throughout the town's infrastructure, making themselves too important to eliminate outright. By the same token, the Swanns cannot declare open warfare on the Devlins. To do so would create a public spectacle and would attract too many eyes to the town. It should be noted that, while the Swanns do have a righteous cause, they aren't always law abiding. During the 1700s, for example, the Swanns were some of the best smugglers in New England.

Major Family Relations

  • Hargets

The Swanns don't have any particular opinion on the Hargets. As far as they know, the Hargets are just another part of the town that needs protecting from the Devlins.

  • Moores

The Swanns are vaguely aware of the Moores and the fact that they aren't as squeaky clean as they might want to appear. They know the Moores have been known to engage in illicit activities since they worked with them during Prohibition, smuggling in alcohol to various speak-easies around town. However that was a long time ago and since the Moores have settled in Devilshire they travel in vastly different circles than the Swanns, leading the family to rate them in there with the Hargets as another family that needs protecting from the Devlins. Maybe just not as much, since they're gangsters!

  • Devlins

The Devlins are the reasons the Swanns hunt. They are constantly preparing for that final confrontation that never seems to actually happen. It frustrates the Swanns to no end that the Devlins don't actively advertise some grand plan for either world domination or world destruction. Then they'd have an excuse to wipe that damned family out once and for all. The Swanns make no secret of their dislike for the Devlins, though members of either family probably don't remember exactly when the demon worshippers-demon hunter thing came to a head. Mostly they try to remain as cool but civil as possible when forced to interact with them in public. Historically there have been times when this has not happened and no one wants to be fodder for more town gossip.

Swann Package

The Swann package reflects the fact that all Swanns born in Devilshire are trained almost from birth to combat the forces of darkness in one way or another. Since not everyone is gifted with athletic ability, some are gently pushed towards town jobs that would make them helpful to the family like becoming EMTs, 911 operators, or doctors. Any job that allows them to have a valid reason to be out on the streets at night or at the scene of a crime is valued. A mistrust of magic is instilled in all of the children, but even those taking a more scholarly track are put through the wringer with training making them hyper-aware of their surroundings and harder targets for the creatures of the night.
