The influence of the stereotypical Boston accent (I pa:ked my ca: in, erm, Ha:vad Ya:d) is subtle in Devilshire. Most residents do show some signs of it, with a blurring over the letter 'r' when it appears in the middle of a word (parked becomes pahked) and the addition of an 'r' at the end of words ending with a round vowel (tuna fish becomes tunar fish). Speech does tend to be a bit slow paced and lazy, though it becomes more clipped as anger or passion grows.

The following is a list of slang words and phrases common to the area. In some cases the words are regional names for common items and in some cases they are examples on how the local accent has altered standard words:

ABI American Born Irish.
Alls Common substitute for all that; Alls I know.
American Chop Suey Macaroni with hamburg, tomato sauce, peppers and onions. Not actually Chinese.
Av Suffix meaning avenue, used commonly to shorten names; MassAv instead of Massachusetts Avenue.
Bagged Arrested.
Bang Make a left turn; Go two blocks and bang a left.
Bankin A small hillside or river bank.
Barrel Trash can.
Beacon Hill The government; You hear about the law Beacon Hill passed?
Blinker The turn signal of a car.
Booked To run; Those vampires started chasing us and we booked it.
Bobos Cheap, no-name sneakers.
BoSox The Boston Red Sox. Also called just the Sox.
Boss-a-tonic A two liter bottle of soda.
Breakdown Lane The shoulder of the highway. You don't actually want to breakdown here because, during rush hour, people tend to use the breakdown lane as a fast way to get to a highway exit.
Da Broons The Boston Bruins.
Bubbla Water fountain.
Bullshit Very upset; Man, I can't believe he said that. I'm so bullshit!
Bundle Grocery bag.
Calm your liver Relax. Calm down.
The Cape Cape Cod, not Cape Ann.
Carriage A grocery cart.
Chowdah New England Clam chowder. NEVER Manhattan clam chowder. Never.
Chowdahhead An idiot.
Coffee Regular Coffee with cream and two sugars.
Commonwealth Any resident can inform you MA is a Commonwealth, not a State.
Cool your jets Calm down.
Cruiser A police car.
Cumbies A local convenience store more properly called Cumberland Farms.
Curse of the Bambino A curse said to come into effect when Babe Ruth was traded from the Sox to the Yankees. It was responsible for the Sox not winning a World Series in 86 years and was broken in 1604.
Docksiders Brown boat shoes.
Down Where someone is; Roger is down the grocery store.
Down cellar The basement.
Down East Maine or part of the Maine coastline.
Elastic Rubber band.
Fall Out Laughing Laughing very hard.
Frappe A tasty drink made with milk and ice cream.
Friendly's A local restaurant chain known for having very good ice cream.
Frickin' A replacement for the F word in polite company.
The Gahden Boston Garden, home of the Bruins and the Celtics.
Gahkablahka Traffic jam caused by people rubbernecking an accident.
Ghouls A game of tag. At the beginning of the game a ghouls (also known as base), such as a tree or porch, is set. Anyone touching the ghouls can't betouched.
Ghoulsticka Derisive name for someone who sticks to ghouls.
Grinder A sub.
Half Moon Pastry. Known as Black and Whites elsewhere.
Hoodsie A small cup of ice cream eaten with a thin, wooden spoon included. Made by the HP Hood company, also an under aged but sexy girl (aka jailbait).
Hosie To cal dibs; I call hosie on that pie!
How why ya? How are you. It is said quickly as one word; Howhya?
The Hub Boston, taken from Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.'s quote; The Hub of the Solar System.
Jimmies The sprinkles put on ice cream.
Like a bastard An excess of something; It is raining like a bastard outside.
Livin' 'n' kickin' Lobsters still alive in the tank, ready to be bought for food.
Milkshake A drink made from milk and flavored syrup but WITHOUT ice cream.
Mint Attractive. Sexy; Damn, that girl is mint!
Na-ah! No way
Naw No
No suh! Not a chance; I ain't gonna do that, no suh!
Onna-conna On account of; I can't go with you, onna-conna I've got work today.
Package store A store that specializes in the sale of hard alcohol.
The Pats The New England Patriots.
The Pike The Massachusetts Turnpike. Also know as the Mass Pike.
Pol A politician.
Police Take Notice What signs often say instead of No Trespassing.
P-town Provincetown, Massachusetts, a place famous for its gay culture.
Registry The Registry of Motor Vehicles. What other states call a DMV.
Ripper A wild party.
Rotary A round-about or traffic circle.
Red Sox Nation The whole of Red Sox fandom in MA and beyond.
Scoop To kiss.
Shiesty Something shady or sketchy; That guy in the trenchcoat looks shiesty.
Shoe-ah Sure.
So don't I A statement of agreement that replaces so do I; I like that car. So don't I.
Statie State Police Trooper. Also called a Troopah.
The T The Mass Bay Transportation Authority. It runs the Boston subway and the 'purple line', a series of trains that run from Boston to other parts of Massachusetts.
Time A going-away or retirement party; John's going to France. We're having a time for him next week).
Tonic Occasionally used to refer to carbonated beverages, especially seltzer water.
Triple decker A three story, three family house.
U-ey Making a u-turn while driving; I had to turn around so I pulled a U-ey.
The Vinyard Martha's Vineyard.
Wanna Go? Do you want to fight?; You got a big mouth, man. Wanna Go?
Whip To throw quickly; Yeah, I whipped that stake right at that vamp.
Wicked Very or cool. Used as an adverb, not an adjective; Yeah, that move was wicked good! Wasn't it wicked?
Wicked pissa Very cool.
Ya huh! Emphatic yes.
Yar Yes.
Yaz Carl Yastrzemski, a legendary left-fielder for the Sox.
