Devilshire is a coastal town in Essex County, Massachusetts sitting on Pocket Bay, United States. It is most famously home to Devilshire University, a respected university with a long tradition of excellence. The population was 12,432 during the 2000 census, though the population swells to around 15,000 when Devilshire University is in session. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 40.2 miles, mostly land. The Black Hound River runs through Devilshire and empties into Pocket Bay.
Devilshire lies 32 miles north and east of Boston. The state capital can be reached by train, which departs five times daily, or by car, driving from Route 1A to Route 1 and into Boston. The trip to Boston is generally about an hour, though at the wrong time of day Route 1 can get fairly congested.
Devilshire University serves as the major employer of the town and the driving force behind its economy. Much of the rest of the town works in the service sector, catering to University students, or as fishermen. There are also a few manufacturing plants.
The town's population is mostly white and Protestant, though there are strong Jewish and Catholic communities and an increasing influx of Latino immigrants, both legal and illegal. Of note is a small Protestant denomination called the Seekers of Biblical Truth. Their only church is located in Devilshire and while the Seekers represent only a small percentage of Devilshire's population, the church's members are some of the wealthiest and most influential in the town. The racial and religious make-up of the University student population tends to be more diverse.
Devilshire holds two celebrations each year. The first is the annual 4th of July Concert, held at Pocket Bay. The second is the Black Hound River festival, an annual flea market and fair held each spring.
