Maxwell's Clothing for Men has been around for years...

History

Maxwell’s Clothing for Gentlemen began as the tailor business of Johannes Maxwell, a German Jewish immigrant that moved to the town of Devilshire in 1932. Originally based out of the spare room in the Maxwell home, the shop started out catering to both genders, with Johannes’ wife, Inga, providing seamstress service to the town’s more affluent ladies. The Maxwells enjoyed a brisk business, quickly becoming a fixture in the town.

In 1937, with the help of a loan from the Harget family, Johannes realized his dream of owning his own storefront. The business, then known as Maxwell’s Fine Clothing, opened on the Main Square in the summer of that year, and soon became known as the place to get custom suits and shirts made. Soon, many of the affluent men of the town were utilizing Maxwell’s for their haberdashery.

Current owner, Jakob Maxwell.

In 1939, Germany invaded Poland, and despite the Maxwells’ popularity in town, anti-Nazi sentiments ran high, and the shop saw a serious decline in their profits. It was at this time that Johannes’ son, Jakob, began helping out around the place, being too young to enlist and go to war. When the war ended, Jakob had graduated high school, and began helping in the store full-time.

Johannes died in 1952, the same year that his grandson Noah was born, leaving the store to his son, Jakob and daughter, Claudia. Jakob turned the focus of the shop to strictly men’s clothing, and changed the name accordingly. He also moved it to its current, larger location. Jakob still runs it today, although one of Claudia’s children is co-owner with him and a third, unnamed party.

Maxwell’s Clothing for Gentlemen specializes in high-end business and formal attire for the modern business man, as well as casual garments. They also offer hand-tailoring and alterations while you wait. Nearly all the selectmen in town have custom suits from Maxwell’s, and they are the tuxedo provider for the Senior High prom.
