Background

The man now known as Tsukino Kenshin (family name being Tsukino, given name being Kenshin) was born February 1st, 1984, in a small village at the base of Mount Fuji. He spent his life in what could be considered the normal relative obscurity a young child is supposed to live in. His father, Tsukino Hadeki was an agricultural specialist (ie: farmer) with a parcel of land which he tended for the benefit of his family. His mother, Tsukino Ai, tended to duties other than crops or cattle that had to be done.

When an unfortunate run-in with a large piece of agricultural equipment claimed the life of his parents, Kenshin was sent to live in an orphanage where he stayed until his sixth year of life. Largely, not much fun was to be had at the orphanage. Mostly concerned with providing three meals a day and trotting the children out to perspective parents, little in the way of recreation was provided for them, leaving Kenshin antisocial much of the rest of his life.

At six, Kenshin went to live with an afluent Japanese gentleman in a large compound that also served as the home of the Koga clan of ninja. The gentleman, Watanabe Ichiro, noted the keen senses of the young boy, even at his early age. He also took note of the huge amounts of potential to be found in the boy. Ichiro gave Kenshin exactly what he needed: A family and a purpose to serve.

The training was both tough and brutal, designed by centuries of perfection to ingrain the most essential skills of a top-notch spy and assassin into the boy. He was trained from this early age to act with stealth in agility in all his movements, to infiltrate and observe the most secure facilities, and when required, kill decisively with no emotion. He was also trained to operate in almost any lighting condition by the most direct method available: submersion. He spent almost two years of his life either underground with no light source, above ground in a dark room, or blindfolded. He learned to operate independant of his sight. While not giving him any special ability to do so, he is trained well enough not to freeze when he loses his vision to darkness. Conversely, this has given him a certain sensitivity to the lighting conditions around him. In daylight, or bright artificial light, he tends to have to wear sunglasses as anything brighter tends to bother his eyes.

Completing his training, Kenshin accomplished his first mission with the infiltration and assassination of a group of Yakuza gangsters. His target was the yakuza underboss known as Chucky Hollywood. Infiltrating as a young perspective member of their gang, Kenshin spent five weeks collection intelligence on their operation for a rival Yakuza boss. When it was deemed that the rival boss had enough information to take over operations, Kenshin visited once again. Instead of reporting for work in his usual black suit, he reported for work in his other black suit (the one with the identity concealing mask) and proceeded to decimate the numbers of Hollywood's gang before fading into the night.

He took his place amongst the ranks of the Koga clan of ninjas. He continued live in the Koga clan's traditional headquarters until he reached the age of majority in Japan. He existed close to the compound none-the-less, spending a portion of his time in Tokyo and another portion of the next few years in Nagasake, blending into the local populations while venturing away every so often for assignments.

The ten year mark of a ninja's life is especially important. Ten years of surviving in this highly dangerous job is an accomplishment in and of itself, but it also marks ten years of good service to the clan. At ten years, it is deemed that a ninja has spent enough time earning and producing for the clan that a suitable replacement has been trained for him. He or she is then allowed to venture off into the world to make his own way, only called upon by the can when their great skill is needed for the most important assignments.

After deliberation, Kenshin decided to turn his sights to the Western world. Already a fluent speaker of English, he felt that it would give him the most freedom from the watchful eyes of the Koga clan while still being of occasional use to them. As he prepared, he came across a strange man wearing traditional clothing and wearing a samurai's katana in the courtyard of the compound. As Kenshin questioned the intruder, the intruder answered evasively, without the ability to give the correct credentials for having gained entry.

As Kenshin drew his ninjato, the stranger drew his katana and the two fought. Seemingly matched skill-for-skill, they fought silently across the compound for hours until the stranger revealed his true power and issued Kenshin a beat down the likes of which he never experienced. It was at this point that the man finally revealed himself to be the hot-tempered Tsukuyomi, the kami of the moon. Scolding Kenshin for his lack of hospitality, he proceeded to select Kenshin as his agent in this world both for his skill and his new-found freedom to move, if not his social graces.

The Kami imparted the power in Kenshin to meet any threat he would run across, but particularly against the oni which invade this world from other demonic dimensions. Humorously, the Kami gave the shinobi only the briefest information in order to take on his new enemies, preferring to keep his new agent "in the dark." Directing Kenshin to a small New England town "to the west", Kenshin bid farewell to his friends and family and moved towards Devilshire where he hopes to settle down a few roots and begin his mission.

People

Watanabe-sensei - Took Kenshin out of the orphanage and trained him to be a top-notch spy and assassin. Mrs. Watanabe makes a killer cup of tea.

Tsukuyomi-no-kami - Kenshin's empowering Kami. Reportedly killed the Kami of Food, Uke Mochi, after the goddess prepared a feast by vomiting fish and then blowing game animals out of her butt. What an asshole. (Tsukuyomi, not... Umm.)
