Background
Ciaran Liam O'Toole was born August 13, 1989 to Patrick and Maire O'Toole in the city of Kinvara in County Galway, Ireland. His father was a fisherman who met Maire when she was visiting the city with her friend Angela while attending University in Galway Bay. She had moved to there from Northern Ireland after her younger brother Eamon was killed in retaliation for a killing, he was thirteen at the time.
A seafaring man, Patrick knew very little about social graces but he courted Maire none the less, every time he would visit Galway to sell his fish. Eventually, she agreed to marry him. Malachy Michael O'Toole was born the very next year. Two years later Andrew Thomas O'Toole was born. Two Years later, Liam Seamus O'Toole was born and then finally came Ciaran.
Andrew and Malachy were very close, and so were Liam and Seamus. Malachy was the type who followed in his father's footsteps, content to walk a narrow path. Andrew was the gentle quiet type who did pretty much as he was told. The pair disapproved very highly of Liam and Ciaran, who were far more the wild sort of children.
Liam was the ringleader at first. He was always getting Ciaran into trouble of all kinds. When Liam was eight and Ciaran was six, the pair tried to scare their mother who had been working at carving a wood, the result was that they were both grounded for several weeks.
It was also at this point their paternal grandmother came to live with them. A woman of sharp intuition and keen insight Grandmother O'Toole, or as she preferred Grams. She made sure that everyone did exactly what they were supposed to when they were supposed to do it. She also made sure that everyone applied themselves when it came to their classes in the Irish language that the law required they take.
When he was seven, Liam talked him into sneaking into Grams' 'study', which used to be Andrew's bedroom and was a tiny little room that was generally kept locked. At first the pair was greatly disappointed by what they found until they knocked into one of the piles of books and found it was a book of demons. They immediately fled the room, and locked themselves in their room and held a discussion to find out what they needed to do about figuring out why their grandmother had these books.
The next day they once again snuck into the study and Grams was actually practicing her magic. This gave them the fuel for figuring out what to do with her, and also exactly why their Grams had those books. Over the next few months they slowly dropped carefully planned hints to their Grams they had seen her doing magic.
Finally she got the hint and then it was another few months before she began teaching them about Witchcraft. Every Samhain, she had been going to Inis Maan to join with her childhood friends in celebrating the feast of the dead. While she was teaching them about Witchcraft, she took them to these celebrations.
When he was ten, she insisted in teaching him the older forms of Irish, as well as Latin. Proper pronunciation for the spells was something that was key to being able to do spells correctly. He also was not permitted to drop studying Irish when most of his classmates were. Also, he was forced to begin studying Latin at school as his third language.
When he was thirteen, he managed to find himself caught in the middle of a War. The Faerie folk were having a battle over a piece of land not terribly far from his school. He made the mistake of wandering through the field just as the battle began. He still has nightmares about what he saw that day. It very nearly caused him to run away, but there was a younger kid that was caught in the middle of things. Luckily he was able to get help from his brother and Grams to get the kid from the middle of things and out of harms way. Of the three, Ciaran used what witchcraft that he knew, combined with what he'd learned about the Faerie Folk from his Grandma. In terms of actual aid, Grams did the majority of the work.
This marked a dramatic change for Ciaran. He began working hard to improve himself because he didn't want to have to rely on others to be able to do just about anything. Also it was at this point that he began spending weekends on Inis Maan with his Grams, studying under a witch by the name of Aisling ni Brennan, who had been a handsome woman in her twenties when Grams met her as a young girl and is now a rather ancient woman who, while knowledgeable didn't have a whole lot of power.
Things changed when he was fourteen, Malachy was settled down with his wife Angela and had their first son. Andrew had gone off to study Irish language at Trinity University. However, at the same time Patrick was having health issues. Patrick and Maire felt that it was best that they move to the United States, where Patrick started working for a fishing company and Maire sold her handcrafted wood items such as beds, cabinets, chairs and the like.
Both Patrick and Maire were granted legal alien status, and began working on becoming legal full citizens. They chose to move to Devilshire, since it was somewhat reminiscent of home. Grams came over as well, but came only temporarily. The United States was drastically different than the Republic was. Ciaran had been taking basic computer classes back in Ireland, but here he learned a lot more about computers. He met another guy named Eric Stoltz, who taught him about hacking. They became good friends and learned even more from each other, although he did keep his being a Witch a secret.
Liam and Ciaran never really adjusted, and while some folks took to their unique behavior, the vast majority of people couldn't stand them.They had very odd ideas on things, enhanced by the fact that they were just the tiniest bit odd since they looked at things a bit different because of the fact they knew there were things outside the normal. They didn't bother to fit in. Liam actually got a little into the goth scene, but Ciaran just got weird.
Continuing his study of witchcraft, Ciaran possessed a natural talent for it. His natural gift of magic seemed to come to fruition while in America. Grams continued his education through the internet, directing him to various sites that helped him learn more about it.
He graduated early having taken a few courses to be able to, and enrolled at Devilshire University majoring in Ancient Languages with a minor in Occult Studies. He's still a little bit on the limited side due to his age, but he takes a full time curriculum. In addition, he tried to figure out his place in the world that he found himself in. He's fairly sure that some of the people who have died recently haven't died of natural causes.

Trivia
Ciaran was originally not designed to be a teenager, but at the last minute it was decided that adding in a teenage witch would have pull a younger audience.
There was almost a fifth brother Eamon but it was decided to leave him out.
