Bertram Moore recently moved to Devilshire, possibly to fill in the void left by all his relatives moving gods know where. He seems to be jobless and generally useless, though anyone in the supernatural community would know that he does reliable business, specifically dealing in Procurement for the Moores at large.

His Story

A is for Aesculus

Sacheverell Bertram Moore could have been born to the life of substance that most of his family members were born to. Unfortunately for him, Winston Moore, his father, had other ideas. While he would train his son to become an accomplished lawyer and middling wizard just like him, Sachie would not share his upbringing. Instead, he would grow up in a middle-class household and go to public school, just like everyone else. Except, of course, for his tutoring at home, which started out with the Occult and later on included Firearms and Fisticuffs.

The boy learned to keep secrets early, when his classmates discovered his fear of frogs and like all children, capitalized on the weakness. The nickname 'Frog Boy' didn't help, either. Deeply annoyed with this kink in his armour, Bertram repayed the debt by ingeniously breaking into school and leaving unpleasant surprises in the other kids' lockers.

Winston, being attentive of whatever happened in his house, knew. He had magically watched the lad's activity and instead of reprimanding his son for doing something illegal, he reprimanded him for his sloppy work. Recognizing that his son lacked magical talent, he attached him to an Uncle Oswald in order to foster the boy's gift.

Bertram never found out if Oswald was indeed a Moore or not, but he certainly wasn't his Uncle.

Bloom

In addition to all his other extra studies, 'Uncle' Oswald took Bertram on nightly extracurricular activites and taught him things that most parents wished their kids would never learn - which included everything from remaining unseen in plain sight to manipulating car alarms. Under Oswald, the boy began to realize the kind of work he'd be doing for his family, and since he enjoyed it, it didn't seem like a bad future despite his lack of magical knack.

1992 saw Bertram introduced to the Devilshire Moores, and he would spend summers there for the former half of his teenage years. While his happy-go-lucky attitude allowed him to get along well enough with Stephen and Jack, Theodore and Wentworth held him in contempt. The feeling was mutual, though Bertram hid his own feelings.

The Herb

Bertram's extra-curricular activites took a bit of a backseat once he was introduced to a certain plant. Up till then, Bertram's chief sources of pleasure were his nights with Oswald, constantly testing himself against his father's standards, and the odd adventure novel or so. Pot changed that. Whiling away a whole week while pondering things at large turned out to be more fun than he'd previously thought possible.

His father tried his best not to spy on his son. He really did, besides what he thought was nescessary. It's just that he was curious and somewhat upset when Bertram's freshman year of high school yielded a report card that just wasn't as satisfactory as the rest of his educational career had been. A few words from Uncle Oswald concerning a lack of progress, a botched up basic spell, and an attitude with his betters that bordered on disrespect led to Mr. Moore discovering Bertram's new pastime. He reacted by cutting off his son's allowance and increasing his study time. No son of his would grow up without knowing what a Fyarl demon was especially allergic to or waste away his afternoons without accomplishing anything.

With no other alternative, Bertram decided to apply what he'd been taught in order to maintain his chosen vice. It was around this time that his father was introducing him to the day-to-day Moore business, and through such a father-son work day he obtained information about a rival firm who'd recently profited.

First Job

There was no way an inexperienced fifteen year old could pull off something like this all on his own even with the training he'd received. So Bertram enlisted Oswald, who agreed to help and was even happy at the initiative the youth had taken in casing the spot.

Having knowledge of an illusion that gave the safehouse the appearance of a derelict floor in a business building and his father's specific notes regarding that spell, a recitation revealed the floor as it was. Making his way deeper into the building's inner sanctum, he located paydirt.

He managed to retrieve enough cash to at least keep him flush for the next few months. Unfortunately, there were other beauties in that room and unable to contain himself, Bertram attempted to take those, too.

That was the first big mistake he'd make, even though it wouldn't be his last. His lack of magical talent and knowledge had cost him, as he'd been unable to notice the alarm spells that were in place. Until this day, he's not quite sure how he got out of that mess, but it's definitely one of the 'miracles' he's experienced.

Ramifications

Oswald was proud of him, but Winston wasn't when he found out. It wasn't good for business, for one thing, and the last thing he needed was a half-cocked adolescent Moore causing havok. After a short lecture free of raised voices, Bertram found out he'd spend his last two years of high school at the Academy in Groton, Mass.

He wasn't too pleased with the decision, but he made do. The rigorous academic and athletic regimen kept him more than busy, though he still did find the time to fund his choice indulgence with night burglaries. He was aware that his father's dramatic change in parenthood was due to the man's love for his son, and wanting what he thought was best. In this case, fostering a wide view of the world. Which is why Bertram shouldn't have been surprised when he graduated (not the top half, due to curriculum change) and came home.

Banished

His father would pay for his higher education, but only after Bertram was cast out into the world and made to fend for himself. His mother wasn't too happy with the decision but then, she rarely had a say in anything. The fact that he showed ambition hadn't helped, as his father didn't like seeing that in his son.

So Bertram was cast out and cut off. He used the $1000 he was left with to transplant himself to New York, where he started out by working two honest jobs and ended up working one along a myriad of dishonest ones alongside people who often should've been in high school. Slowly, he ingratiated himself into the supernatural community there and began carrying out contract work.

New York Was Okay

It was around then that Bertram met Dr. Isaac Gomez, a scientist at Columbia University who happened to be his dealer there. It turned out that Gomez was a disgraced researcher who now funded his own studies with a team of former students through the mixing, growing, and selling of illegal drugs.

Bertram found enough financial stability to enroll into NYCC and did well for himself, despite the low-end apartment in Mott Haven. Mindful of his situation, he kept his eyes peeled and soon discovered that his father was having him watched. Wanting to see if these watchers would do more than just watch, he pissed off the wrong demons and ended up in the hospital.

Reconciliation

His parents doted on him, after they found him lying in the hospital. He returned to Providence and transferred to Rhode Island University where he pursued a degree in PoliSci. He was introduced to Chase, an actual uncle of his who was more experienced with Bertram's area of expertise. Under his wing, he started working for the family.

While going where he wasn't allowed and snatching things from under noses belonging to various personages in the occult underground, Bertram quickly acquired a growing taste for the kind of executive discretion his superiors enjoyed. Eager to prove himself to his family and start building a sure path toward the prestige that seemed so easily attainable, he surprised his fellow Moores with the risks that he took to fill the family coffers. Unfortunately, this invited the sort of attention that came with unexpected, premature success.

Rivalry

Danni and Cornelius were cousins of Bertram's who held great promise, according to the rest of the family. A few years his senior, they had proved themselves more than capable of the combined resourcefulness and ruthlessness that made an excellent Moore. As the duo fully expected to one day head the Providence Moores, they wouldn't tolerate any chances of a cousin upstaging their vision of the future.

Bertram meanwhile continued to do work on the side with Dr. Gomez, procuring parts for him and continuing to use him as a dealer while fostering a close friendship bonded by hashish. He often had odd requests, and getting his hands on some of the equipment proved trickier than the usual. Still, they enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship.

Made Man

It might have been due to these ongoing dealings that Bertram failed to sniff out the ambush that was laid out for him. Danni was a skilled sorceress and Cornelius a well-known wizard. Together, the three often worked as a retrieval team. Given his own knack for the surreptitious arts, Bertram often left the magical dilemmas to his cousins. So when a job found him triggering the magical alarums in a replay of his very first job, Bertram knew that somewhere along the line, the duo had failed to cut off the magical security system. After a frantic chase, he managed to find his cousins, who had erected an escape portal. Instead of thinking, he jumped in without question as he had always done, foolishly trusting both Danni and Cornelius.

Welcome to Liberia

He found himself in the interior of a nondescript warehouse, surrounded by heavily armed men who had been awaiting his arrival. All he remembered of that night was someone saying “Welcome to Liberia, Mr. Moore” before his pathetic attempt to fight his way out of the ensuing melee was interrupted by a rifle butt to his jaw. His cousins had tricked him well, and instead of killing him outright, had decided to let him rot to death.

This proved to be a mistake. While Bertram didn’t have their magical firepower, he was used to dealing with impossible situations. After what might have been days or months of torture, someone left something he could use in his hole of a cell, and he broke out. As it turned out, Cornelius and Danni had their own little side business, and were funding a faction in Liberia. Instead of AK-47s, they had offered the Liberian Liberation Front a supernatural edge.

Free but barely surviving in war-torn Liberia, Bertram proceeded to use his specific proficiency to locate the leaders who were dealing with Danni and Cornelius and do something he wasn’t exactly used to – liquidate them. Waiting in the shadows for just the right moment, he managed to at least eliminate the man who had been dealing directly with his beloved cousins before getting the hell out of Dodge.

Return of the Moore

Disheveled, malnourished, and hardened he arrived in the United States after coming into contact with U.N personnel in 2003. It had been more than a year since that fateful job, and he was both surprised and enraged to find that his funeral had already been held. He’d thought his family would have at least tried to get a few divinations done. As it turned out, the death of his mother had distracted his father enough to accept his son’s reported death as yet another injustice of the universe. Of course, Cornelius and Danni had covered their tracks, and Bertram knew that his word alone wouldn’t help him there.

Readjusting took awhile, especially since he found out that he’d now be taking his orders from Cornelius. He managed to finish his degree, though he didn’t pursue law school and his father’s actions, or lack thereof, had led him to walk out on the old man. With nothing going for him, he didn’t turn down the jobs that Dr. Gomez offered him. A little of the mystery surrounding the old man’s experiments was unveiled and suggested the beginnings of an opportunity for Bertram.

Levelling the Playing Field

Perhaps the opportunity was only seen as one because of the bad hand he’d been played in life. Sure, he was fairly skilled when it came to pilfering the next Shroud of Avyntas or Dead Conjurer’s Grimoire, but he really wasn’t blessed like the rest of his family was. Like Cornelius and Danni, many of the Moores had a natural raw talent for magic that he didn’t have. That he should have had. Most of the players in the supernatural world had something that made them more, or less, depending on whom you talked to. For a Moore and especially for Bertram, this was usually more. More that he didn’t have. He wasn’t a demon, and didn’t have the usual knacks that came with that, and he wasn’t gifted when it came to weaving spells. He’d been given just enough in life to know that he didn’t have much. Sure, he’d hid this from himself, mostly with the help of some good sticky-icky. The cold turkey he got in Liberia helped him to realize that, despite running on adrenaline at the time.

It put things in perspective. He’d been so content with his lot in life that he didn’t notice when his more highly motivated cousins decided to kick before he got up. There was no static. If he didn’t improve himself, he deteriorated. He hadn’t set his eyes on the top and it had almost cost him his life. It let him know that he didn’t just want to coast through life and go nowhere. The family needed to change and he was the one to do it. Expand their clientele, their own employee base, and even take a more active role in providing services beyond the magical. An expansion that would put them in competition with their more mundane counterparts, using the preternatural edge they already possessed to crush those very rivals.

Family business is all well and good, but the most successful corporations are anything but a family. However, to do that, Bertram would need to learn more about how his family worked. Right now, all he did was run errands. He was the metaphorical janitor in his family’s Forbes 500 company. He needed to make himself heard without appearing threatening. He needed to go on acting like he didn’t care about anything but the moment, while taking the steps needed to ensure his future. He’d need to figure out which of his relatives were pulling all the strings, and eventually take their place. Change was needed, and he would be its catalyst.

However, to do all that, he’d need something to level the playing field against his fellow Moores and the supernatural community at large. A solution to this problem came in a ganja-phany he had while trying to watch a rom-com whose title or plot he can never remember with Dr. Gomez. After the numerous and often pointless philosophical digressions, the old man started babbling about his project, which he’d been very excited about since Bertram’s return. He mentioned something about human improvement, about pushing the natural boundaries of a person’s body. While Bertram has a tendency to forget some of the things he talks about when he’s flying, he didn’t forget that.

Edge

He broached the subject over lattes a week after that movie night. At first, the good Doctor was reticent. He didn’t want to talk to Bertram about exactly what he was doing, now sober. His efforts to change the subject just incited the Moore to pull a cheap shot at all the ‘favours’ he’d been doing for the scientist. Eventually, Gomez cracked and talked to Bertram about his project. Apparently, he was working on a myriad of ways to improve human physique, conducting extensive tests initially on Pygmy Chimpanzees and later on various species of demon and most recently, a human being. The subject was injected with fibroid muscular protein complex in order to increase muscle density, underwent a surgical process that increased blood flow in the retina which unfortunately, rendered the test subject blind but theoretically could improve eyesight, a neurosurgical operation that altered bio-electrical nerve transduction to shielded electronic trans-duction which increased his reaction time, and gene therapy that accelerated autoabridement and epithelialization, among other things. Yeah, Bertram didn’t quite understand everything Isaac was telling him, except that this procedure could make him faster, stronger, and a lot more durable.

Familiar with the sacrifices made for magic, Bertram wasn’t particularly offended by human experimentation, despite suffering a reputation of being ‘soft’ among others of his profession. Especially when Gomez mentioned the man was another local dealer who Bertram knew of. Gomez warned that despite promising results, there would be potential side-effects, as with any procedure. After numerous attempts to dispose of the subject failed, his amazing tenacity did nothing but convince Bertram of undergoing the procedure himself, though they did eventually manage to dispose of the subject. Convinced that this was the potential ace up his sleeve that he was looking for, Bertram beseeched Gomez to allow him to undergo the experiment. Beseeched.

Reluctant but resigned to do it, Gomez first required a few more human experiments, and as a deal, would perform the procedures on Bertram if he provided the much needed live human bodies. The team of course meant kidnapping. Bertram surprised them with something else. He merely found volunteers in one of Providence’s seedy bars that catered to those in the know. There were plenty of people who’d kill to improve their chances in life, and he just found them and gave them the opportunity. Unfortunately, it took several erroneous results before Gomez was sure he had perfected the procedure. Unfortunately for those who underwent it without any particularly obvious side effects, the team disposed of them, too. Gomez was finally ready to operate on Bertram, telling him that it would be fairly quick and painless.

Isaac turned out to have a penchant for understatement, as the ‘quick and painless’ procedure took a little over six months, counting the therapy that followed the actual surgeries. Initial tests informed the delighted Dr. Gomez that his surgery finally bore fruit – Bertram possessed alacrity beyond anything he’d thought possible, sight like he’d never seen before, and a durability that he had never previously enjoyed, as well as a marginal increase in muscle mass and density, though some facets of his transformation did not become apparent immediately.

Nemesis Comes

Jubilant over his new found edge, he finally had the conversation that had been a long time coming. He confronted Cornelius. Like any traitor, the older Moore expected the worse and, acting on paranoia, ran from Bertram after setting a couple of his demon hirelings on him. Using what Dr. Gomez had given him, he managed to overcome the demons and even relished in the exhilaration of combat, something that he’d only engaged in when he absolutely had to. Cornering Cornelius, he knocked his cousin out before he could utter a spell. Instead of disposing of him immediately, Bertram took his time. Gomez’ procedure had altered a little more than just his physicality. Like a cat with a mouse, Bertram dallied with Cornelius, making his cousin know full well what was happening to him.

Your Turn, Cousin

With the deed done, security stepped up with the Moores of Rhode Island. No one suspected a thing, with the exception of Danni, who /knew/ what must have happened to Cornelius, although it wasn’t something she had initially expected from Winston’s son. In the past, Sacheverell had always struck her as being a little queasier than the rest of the family about the nastier sides of the business. In fact, it was known that he didn’t engage in any job that harmed what he deemed as ‘innocents’, and disliked creative interrogation. This probably represented the small influence his mother had enjoyed over him.

Feeling indomitable, Bertram didn’t pursue Danni. Instead, he concentrated on building a name for himself within his trade of choice, working for his family and excelling with the help of his newfound abilities. A joke even circulated which likened him to a Phoenix, following the truly odd circumstances surrounding his ‘death’.

As far as everyone else knew, the targets had been responsible for his disappearance – not his cousins. Given the ingenuity so prevalent among Moores, Bertram firmly decided to leave Danni be, in order to better hide the truth about Cornelius’ death.

He decided to never make the same mistake again. Instead of moving headlong unbridled, he began to make use of his shortcomings, exaggerating them for all who would see. He worked less for his family, and even purposefully botched a few jobs. He began to pass the days much as he did in his first year of high school, with the smell of a certain plant in the air and his legs on the couch. He still worked nights, of course, though he kept them as quiet as possible, acquiring items of interest for persons of substance.

Laying the Cornerstone

From time to time, someone or something would come looking for him, intending nothing but ill will. He’d dispatch them, and creative questioning revealed that they were usually working for Danni. This constant pursuit eventually led him to take on an especially lucrative job, one that had the potential to consolidate a temporary and mutually beneficial alliance – something that’d usually paint him in the sort of light that would have the older Moores noticing him in a good way. With his almost unparalleled celerity came patience, apparently. Or at least the wisdom it took to bide his time, till an opportunity presented itself.

Around the World in A Lot More than 80 Days

The job he took turned out to take much longer than expected. It seemed simple, at first, like most jobs. Locate a certain artifact and retrieve it. Then the family’s initial investigation placed the relic’s last appearance in Brunei, in the private gallery of a wealthy collector who wasn’t the Sultan. He went there, dutifully, and preliminary investigation revealed nothing, till someone finally pointed him in the direction of Phuket.

He’d been had, as they say.

This, he couldn’t tolerate. It had happened too many times in his past, and it was always his fault. Like the rest of his family said, he was soft. He didn’t use all the methods available to him, didn’t chase down all the avenues for the answers he needed. And this time, they would pay. He would never be crossed with impunity again. It was a pity, nonetheless, when he went back to Bandar Seri Begawan to track down Faisal, the local contact who’d misled him. He’d liked the guy, had even shared a joint with him. He did share another joint with him, except this time, the man was tied to the ceiling of an empty shop lot and begging for respite. It wasn’t the first interrogation Bertram had conducted, but it was definitely the first one that he’d actively participated in. He found it to be almost as calming as weed - figuring out ways to scare the prisoner into talking. He got his answer.

The collector and his prized item had caught word of the Moore’s intentions, and had accordingly relocated to Addis Ababa. Bertram followed him there, and while he clashed with the man’s personal detail, he failed to get his hands on either the man or the artifact in question. Art Anwar, the collector, was on the run and Bertram wasn’t the only one who was chasing him.

Cluj-Napoca

The chase took him up to Tripoli, Luxor, Tel Aviv, and he didn’t make any substantial progress until he hit Cluj-Napoca, Romania. There he managed to subvert a member of Anwar’s personal bodyguard, and finally got a handle on the slippery collector. Except, once in the premises, he couldn’t locate the artifact, and the fact that the descriptions were vague didn’t help. When the man moved yet again, this time to Stuttgart, he took more time in finding out all he could about something he’d only known as the ‘Vessel’. This vessel held not liquids, but raw magical power and could be used as a battery for otherwise unthinkable rituals. Why his family wanted this was obvious.

Locating an academic expert on the vessel was harder than he’d thought, and while hiring more than one spook to keep an eye on Anwar and his precious vessel, Bertram went to London, specifically to Oxford University, to find out more about this elusive artifact. Unfortunately for Bertram, the man was well acquainted with Moores, and refused to divulge anything informative he knew on the subject. So Bertram asked, the hard way. He discovered, with this one, that scaring the man without actual application was even more effective. Teasing the information out of the man while smoking a rather excellent brand he’d acquired in Romania, he realized, suddenly, that he didn’t really care whether this man was innocent or not, because there were no innocents, and when it came down to it, he didn’t give a shit about this ‘bloke’ since he’d do whatever it took to get the job done.

Deadline

This was probably emphasized by an e-mail he’d received while in Tel Aviv, from his old friend Dr. Gomez. It was a letter of apology concerning the changes the scientist had wrought in the Moore. Since successfully completing the procedure, the Dr. had been running more tests, this time on mice and demons of similar stature, to try and gauge any long term effects on Bertram. So far, the acquisitions expert had learned that he didn’t need a hospital, and healed wounds at astonishing rates. According to Isaac, this meant that he’d never age. This sounded good until the next sentence, which told Bertram that he’d just expire suddenly, despite never feeling the effects of aging and even re-growing limbs. Sending blood samples to Dr. Gomez for further study, the scientist had replied with his ‘expiration date’. Sacheverell Bertram Moore was going to die at 42, while never seeming older than he was then. This time frame gave him ten years to take over the Moores and four more to change things to fit the vision he’d had after Liberia. He fully intended to be the Moores’ Alexander, and that meant giving up whatever his mother had taught him.

Filled with new resolve, he extracted the information he wanted out of the poor scholar, finding out that the artifact was in truth a human being, and that human being was Anwar’s daughter. Nonplussed by information that would have stopped him from completing the job years before, Bertram forged ahead, kidnapping and delivering the ‘goods’ to his superiors. It had taken him longer than he’d expected, and in that time he’d gotten behind on family politics, something which he fully intended to get back into. He went back to Rhode Island in 2007, where he continued to pull jobs for the family while pretending to be the harmless pothead. He didn’t want too much attention, after all, just enough to be trusted and not enough to be feared. Yet.

Watch Out, Devilshire

A few weeks ago, he received a call. A call that spells the kind of opportunity that may one day allow him to pull himself up to the top before his biologically imposed deadline. Apparently, his old cousins in Devilshire left the business there waning, and then disappeared somewhere or other. Honestly curious about them and his old summer haunt, he figures he’ll move in to their place, if this Gary, a man of the family, doesn’t mind too much. Perhaps he’ll help fill the vacuum. It might even get Danni out of his hair.

Personality

Bertram tries to project sometimes annoying 'laid back pothead' and that's fairly easy, since that's basically who he was. After the deadline, though? He's definitely all about business, if someone gets close enough to uncover what's beneath it all. Like many Moores, he does have a bit of a d-bag in him.

People

Family & Friends

Winston Moore(NPC) - His father who wasn't too happy with the family's business and tried to distance himself from things and raised his son unconventionally, for a Moore. After Bertram's increasing work for the family and the death of his mother, they haven't been all too tight.

The Devilshire Moores - He spent his teenaged summers with them, but wasn't really in touch for much after that.

Franny Moore - Cousin who seems like a nice enough kid - one that's ripe for the corrupting! Except, it seems she's already corrupted. She's offered to clean the Manse up in exchange for a room. He'd have let her stay anyway. The house is too quiet!

Gia Moore - Playful cousin of his. It looks like she'll be accomplishing great things. She seems to truly care for Franny, despite the half-ness.

Wentworth Moore - The man-tastic distant cousin whoes gone independant.

Marley Moore - In-law! She has so many buttons! Push push! Mostly on accident. Almost all on accident.

Gary Moore (NPC) - He's not sure about this guy, other than the fact that he's who he'll probably be taking his orders from and the fact that he's from Jolly Old.

Dr. Isaac Gomez (NPC) - An old dealer and a better friend, who made it possible for Bertram to level the playing field.

Acquaintances

Sam Valhalla - Indian dude who should be annoying as hell but for some reason. Is not. Beat Bertram in a drinking contest.
Lina - Bert has had some trouble getting tail, lately. So he's decided to take on a new approach. He's hoping Lina will be his first victim!
Lt. Yeager - So MooMoo decided to break down again, but it broke down in front of the house of a rather attractive ex-Spec Ops operative. Many shots later, he ends up in her bedroom. And the only skin that touches is when they wrestle and he gets pinned! Cool in his books.

Enemies

Cornelius Moore (NPC) - Ambitious cousin who decided that Bertram was a threat and had him taken care of. He paid for it with his life.

Danni Moore (NPC) - She, on the other hand, he can't touch, since that'd probably raise suspicion. She's not above sending others to do her dirty work, which she's been doing on and off. Thankfully, Bertram's survived so far, as he believes he will. Since he's no longer in Providence, he hopes she'll give him some slack.

Trivia

Bertram's Real Addiction
  • The writers had actually intended Kris Holden-Reid to play the part and thus complete the whole Moores have acted in the Tudors thing. However, they couldn't place him for some reason and by the time they found out, McAvoy was already cast.
  • Bertram was named after P.G. Wodehouse's Bertie Wooster and Stan Sitwell of Arrested Development, in a circuitous sense. Sacheverell Sitwell was an architectural writer who shared the last name.
  • It was recently discovered by the Italian manufacturer Ferrero that James McAvoy and Kal Penn often enjoy their hazelnut spread, Nutella. In order to make their product more recognized in the United States, Ferrero has signed a multi-million dollar product placement deal with the producers of Devilshire. James McAvoy's own recipes are often featured on-screen.

Livejournal

Bertram does not have livejournal, but he does have an in character Twitter.
